Cruise passengers told to turn off lights and music for fear of Somali pirates
Holidaymakers had their dream cruise turned into a terrifying nightmare after being ordered to turn their lights off at night due to the risk of pirate attacks.
The Sea Princess was supposed to be taking her passengers on a luxury voyage from Sydney to Dubai recently.

However mid-way through the 104-day journey the ship entered dangerous waters, and staff had to tell the 1,900 passengers to turn off their lights and music between sunset and sunrise for 10 days so as not to attract the attention of Somalian pirates.

Passengers who paid $55,000 (£42,000) for the trip said the vessel turned into a ‘ghost ship’ as it passed through the India Ocean, with the lavish parties and boisterous nights suddenly halted by the crew.

The crew even put the alarmed passengers through a ‘pirate drill’, which involved everyone returning to their cabins so they could be counted.

Holiday makers were also told that in an actual pirate attack they were to lock their balcony and cabin doors and wait in the corridors so there would be two doors between the pirates and them.
Australian passenger Carolyn Jasinki wrote in news.com.au: ‘It was made very clear on the Sea Princess, very quickly, that this pirate threat was not something to be joked about.

Any remaining smirks soon disappeared as the pirate drill alarm sounded and the crew was instructed to move to their designated muster stations.’

Thankfully the ship did not run into any pirates during the cruise.

A Princess Cruises spokesperson said they do not discuss security procedures, however they added: ‘Any measures aboard Sea Princess were simply taken out of an abundance caution and not in response to a specific threat and are common to international shipping sailing in the region.’
